Career & Academic Preparation Program
VIU's Career and Academic Preparation program offers you a friendly atmosphere and a wide range of courses at various levels to get you started on your college education.
This program is for adults who need to complete high school subjects in preparation for entry into college programs, want a Grade 12 diploma, or improve their chances at a job or a promotion. You can attend classes during the day or at night. You must be 17 years or older and have been out of school for at least one year.
There are three terms per year:

- Fall term: September – December
- Spring term: January – March
- Intersession term: April – June
You can start in any term.
How to get started:
- Phone Vancouver Island University at 250-746-3509 to arrange a meeting with Student Services to help you plan the right courses to reach your educational goal.
- Visit the Coordinator of CAP (Career & Academic Preparation) to get your "Permission to Register" form. You can see the coordinator on Monday or Thursday between 11 am - 1pm (drop-in) to get your "Permission to Register"
- Fill out an Application for Admission and take that and your "Permission to Register:" to Registration and get enrolled.
Levels
Level 1 – Basic
Basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Courses: English 010, Math 010.
Level 2 – Fundamental
A continuation of basic skills development in reading, writing and mathematics, as well as an emphasis on study skills and confidence building.
Courses: English 020, English 025, Math 020.
Level 3 – Intermediate
Grade 10 equivalency, to prepare for the many vocational programs that require Grade 10, and to prepare for Grade 11 and 12 subjects.
Courses: English 037, Math 030, Science 030.
Level 4 – Advanced
Grade 11 equivalency, to prepare for vocational, academic or technical programs that require Grade 11.
Courses: English 047, Math 041, Math 047, Physics 047, Biology 047, Chemistry 047.
Level 6 – Provincial Level
The Grade 12 academic level provides you with Grade 12 academic course completion and prerequisites for University and Career/Technical programs.
